Cultural tours in Greece, from Mycenae to Minoan Crete
Esplora’s cultural tours in Greece are built around the country’s oldest stories rather than its busiest beaches. Mainland Greece and Crete both carry a depth of history that rewards slowing down: Mycenaean citadels, Delphi’s oracle, and on Crete, a Minoan civilisation that predates classical Greece altogether. Byzantine Greece runs through the itinerary too, in monasteries and churches from the same period our historian guides know from Istanbul to the Caucasus, so a single trip often connects threads that most tours treat as entirely separate subjects. Our guides treat this history as genuinely interesting in its own right, not as a backdrop for a photograph, and a small group of no more than twelve guests means there is time for real conversation and real questions as you go. We go deep into the places we visit rather than skimming across a wider list, so a single significant site, properly explained, tends to matter more on our itineraries than ticking off a longer roster of famous names. That is the whole philosophy behind Esplora: we run tours to places we genuinely love, and Greece, with its layered myth, archaeology and Byzantine inheritance, has been one of those places for a long time.
Our small group cultural tours in Greece: Mainland and Crete
The Classical Greece tour takes in mainland Greece’s essential sites in one carefully paced itinerary: Athens, Delphi, Meteora’s monasteries, built from the fourteenth century onward on near-vertical sandstone pillars, Mycenae’s Lion Gate and the harbour town of Nafplio, with its Venetian Palamidi fortress looking out over the Argolic Gulf. Delphi, Mycenae and Meteora are all UNESCO World Heritage sites in their own right, and all meals and entrance fees are included throughout, with the group kept small enough that a site like Delphi’s Sanctuary of Apollo gets a proper amount of time rather than a rushed circuit. Our Crete tour heads south to the island that gave Europe its first great civilisation, exploring the Minoan palaces of Knossos and Phaistos alongside the more recent history of Chania and Rethymno’s old Venetian and Ottoman quarters. Crete’s food gets its due too: the tour includes Cretan wine and a cooking element, because understanding a place through its kitchen is, for us, as valid as understanding it through its ruins. Both tours run with guaranteed departure dates, so once a trip is confirmed, it runs.

If our scheduled cultural tours in Greece do not line up with your dates, or you would like to travel with your own group of friends or family, get in touch and we can talk through a bespoke itinerary. We are able to add extra departures to the programme, or build an escorted tour of Greece designed specifically around your interests, whether that is classical archaeology, Byzantine history or Minoan Crete. Every Esplora Greece tour stays capped at twelve guests and is led by a guide with a genuine depth of knowledge, so the pace stays thoughtful rather than rushed, and the history has room to actually land.
