You may want to do some background reading before the trip. Here is a short list of some of the books we have enjoyed.
Non Fiction: Travel, General Interest
-
The Crossing Place ~ Philip Marsden
As much about Greater Armenia as the modern-day Armenia itself, but a compelling journey into this culture.
-
An Armenian Sketchbook ~ Vasily Grossman
-
Visions of Ararat, Writings on Armenia ~ Christopher Walker
-
Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan ~ Lonely Planet
-
Armenia with Nagorno Karabagh ~ Deirdre Holding
The Bradt guide to Armenia
-
The Caucasus : An introduction ~ Thomas de Waal
A general history of the Caucasus. Scholarly and in-depth, this makes excellent background reading.
-
From the Holy Mountain : A journey in the shadow of Byzantium ~ William Dalrymple
Not really a book on Armenia, but a must-read nevertheless as it contains so much of interest on the early Christian church.
-
Bread and Ashes – A Walk through the Mountains of Georgia ~ Tony Anderson
A superbly readable travelogue recounting the author’s time in the Caucasus around the turn of this century. But far more than just describing his walks, he gives us a very insightful guide to modern Georgia.
-
Georgia: In the mountains of poetry ~ Peter Nasmyth
